The 26th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards were handed out Sunday night, and the big winner on the night was Bong Joon-ho’s?, which shocked the?room –?and most people watching at home –?by winning the night’s top prize, Outstanding Performance By A Cast In A Motion Picture. It is the first time ever that a foreign-language film has won the SAG Awards’ top honor and sets the film up as a rival frontrunner to1917heading into the Oscars. Joaquin Phoenix shored up his frontrunner status leading into the Academy Awards, winning Outstanding Performance By A Male Actor In A Leading Role for(he paid tribute to his fellow nominees, revealing he’s lost many a gig to Leonardo DiCaprio and jokingly telling Christian Bale he wish he would “just suck once”). Among the other winners, a number of categories went very much as expected:?Laura Dern and Brad Pitt won in the supporting categories on the film side; Phoebe Waller-Bridge won for acting in a comedy series for?and Michelle Williams was recognized for her work inon the TV side. But there were also some surprises, includingFosse/Verdonco-star Sam Rockwell beating out Jared Harris for lead actor in a TV movie or limited series, and?‘s Jennifer Aniston’s win over Olivia Colman and Helena Bonham Carter for Outstanding Performance By A Female Actress In A Drama Series. Perhaps the biggest highlight of the night –?at least if social media was the judge – was Brad Pitt’s acceptance speech, during which the actor got candid about his personal life and delivered the evening’s best line, a gentle dig at director Quentin Tarantino’s obsession with his actress’s feet: “Quentin has separated more women from their shoes than the TSA!”. And there were two more noteworthy standing ovations, firstly for the cast ofParasite, who introduced that film as a nominee for Outstanding Performance By A Cast In A Motion Picture before their shock win, and then for Robert De Niro, who received the Life Achievement Award from DiCaprio.
